Hunting Elk
in the Northern Rockies
The small, mountain town of Toad
River, British Columbia is best known
for its collection of more than 4,580
hats — one for each mile between the
Yukon and the continental United States,
plus a few that have been donated by travelers on
the Alaska Highway. Most visitors also find it impossible to
ignore the spectacular wildlife that inhabit this so-called
Serengeti of North America. But for the serious sportsman,
the adventure begins less than 10 miles away.
Located on a 500-acre ranch set in the scenic Toad River
Valley, Stone Mountain Safaris’ custom cedar lodge,
home-cooked meals, big screen TV and hot tub may sound
like a relaxing, mountain vacation. Outfitter Leif Olsen
might disagree.
“We want to satisfy our clients to the best of our ability,
providing a quality experience on every hunt,” says Leif.
“But we also expect the hunter to understand that rigorous
preparation for the hunt — such as shooting ability and
physical condition — are sometimes necessary to add to the
success and enjoyment of their adventure.”
After a short flight to base camp, the hunt begins the next
day as you and your guide mount up on horseback and begin
to scour the drainages for a monster bull. Although the elk
season is only open for 10 days, 9 out of 10 hunters have an
opportunity to bring a magnificent 6-point trophy back to
spike camp.
Just because you have that itch to hunt the Canadian
Rockies, there is no reason to stop with just a trophy elk.
Elk hunts with Stone Mountain Safaris can be easily combined with moose or mountain goat hunts. These are
very successful and it is possible for a hunter to take all
three for an additional trophy fee. And don’t forget to purchase
your wolf tags before the hunt. Wolf is always included
in elk hunts
